God Is Many Things, Including a Disciplining Father

God is a Spirit –

John 4:24, “God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

God is a consuming fire –

Hebrews 12:29, “for our God is a consuming fire.”

God is all-powerful –

Isaiah 40:28,”Have you not known? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He does not faint or grow weary; his understanding is unsearchable.”

Jeremiah 32:27, “Behold, I am the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is anything too hard for me?”

Matthew 19:26, “But Jesus looked at them and said, “With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”

God is all-knowing –

Isaiah 46:9-10, “Remember the former things of old; for I am God, and there is none other; I am God, and there is none like Me, declaring the end from the beginning, and from ancient times the things that are not yet done, saying, ‘My counsel shall stand, and I will do all My pleasure,’”

Hebrews 4:13, “And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

Job 28:4, “For he looks to the ends of the earth and sees everything under the heavens.”

Job 37:16, “Do you know the balancings of the clouds, the wondrous works of him who is perfect in knowledge?”

God is everywhere present at the same time –

I Kings 8:27, “But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Behold, heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain You, how much less this house which I have built!”

Psalms 139:7-12, “Where can I go from Your Spirit? Or where can I flee from Your presence? If I ascend to heaven, You are there; If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there. If I take the wings of the dawn, If I dwell in the remotest part of the sea,”

Jeremiah 23:23-24, “Am I a God who is near,” declares the LORD, “And not a God far off? “Can a man hide himself in hiding places So I do not see him?” declares the LORD. “Do I not fill the heavens and the earth?” declares the LORD.”

God is Holy –

Leviticus 19:2, “Speak to all the congregation of the people of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy.”

I Peter 1:15, “But as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct,”

God is Just –

Job 34:2, “Surely, God will not act wickedly, And the Almighty will not pervert justice.”

Deuteronomy 32:4, “The Rock! His work is perfect, For all His ways are just; A God of faithfulness and without injustice, Righteous and upright is He.”

God is the Judge of the whole earth –

I Peter 4:5, “But remember that they will have to face God, who will judge everyone, both the living and the dead.”

Isaiah 33:22, “For the LORD is our judge, The LORD is our lawgiver, The LORD is our king; He will save us.”

James 4:12, “There is only one lawgiver and judge, he who is able to save and to destroy. But who are you to judge your neighbor?”

Genesis 18:25, “Far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?”

Psalm 65:2, “for you answer our prayers. All of us must come to you.”

God is Love –

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.”

Romans 5:8-9, “But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Much more than, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him.”

God is Mercy –

2 Samuel 24:14, “And David said to Gad, I am in a great strait: let us fall now into the hand of the LORD; for his mercies are great: and let me not fall into the hand of man.”

Psalms 86:5, “For you, Lord, are good, and ready to forgive; and plenteous in mercy to all them that call on you.”

God is in Christ –

II Corinthians 5:19, “For God was in Christ, reconciling the world to himself, no longer counting people’s sins against them. And he gave us this wonderful message of reconciliation.”

John 14:7, “If you had really known me, you would know who my Father is. From now on, you do know him and have seen him!”

Colossians 1:15, “Christ is the visible image of the invisible God. He existed before anything was created and is supreme over all creation,”

God is our Heavenly Father –

Matthew 6:8, “Our Father who is in heaven, hallowed be Your name.”

God is a Father of Discipline –

Hebrews 12:5-11, “And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: “My son, do not make light of the Lord’s discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you, because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son.” Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father? If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons. Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live! Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness. No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.”

God's Mercy bigger than any mistake

God is many things, including a disciplining Father. He has all power. He sees all. He knows all. He is the Judge of all flesh. He is a consuming fire that no human can approach unto. He is love, but He also is our Heavenly Father, and as such, He does discipline His children when they go astray.

The good news of the Gospel is that He manifested Himself in Jesus Christ as God in flesh, so that Christ could suffer in all points as we do and be able to relate to our struggles. Jesus paid the price for our sins and backslidings with His life’s Blood. He conquered death, hell and the grave, by becoming our ransom. He died in our place, so that we could have a High Priest who could intercede for us before a Holy God. He gives us the hope of His return in the Rapture, so that those who believe in Him can be clothed with glorified bodies like His; this will enable us to see the Father and dwell in His Holy Presence.

When we stray, He is merciful; as Jesus taught in the story of the Prodigal son. He welcomes those who return to Him, with open arms and rejoicing. He forgives and covers their sins in the Blood of Christ, not to be remembered against them anymore.

For those who insist on living their own selfish ways for the world and its devil, He becomes our Judge. His Mercy and Love will cease for the rebellious at the Judgment.

Jesus is the Rock and those who fall on Him in repentance shall be broken as a grain of wheat, and bear fruit for His Kingdom. Those who refuse to be broken, will be crushed, suffering an eternity of darkness with the prince of darkness.

Which will God be to you? A Loving God? Or a God of Judgment? Why not allow Him to use the circumstances in your life that are affecting the peace of your soul, to bring you closer to Him? Repent of all that displeases Him, and receive all that God is in your life for eternity.
