Overview of the Old Testament Books – Genesis Part Two of Three

Angels Created before anything else –

Before God created the earth, He created the angels, to be His ministers over all of His creation. Lucifer was a special angel, created to reflect the Glory of God’s beauty throughout the Universe, especially around the Throne of God.

When God created the earth, the angels of God shouted for joy over what God had created (per Job 38:7), showing that everything that God created was originally good, without sin or corruption.

Second Day not good because of separation from Throne of God –

Everything that God created during the six days of creation were said to be good, except for the second day where He separated His third heaven, where He dwells, from the second and first heavens, with a ‘firmament’ or an expansion.

Separation eliminated at end of time – All Things Created New and Good –

God did not say this was good, because He meant for all of creation to be in fellowship with Him without any separations. At the end of time, He creates a New Heaven and a New Earth where He comes down to dwell with Man after Satan and all who do evil are cleansed from the old earth. (Revelation 21:1-5)

Lucifer rebelled between Genesis 1:1 and Genesis 1:2 –

Lucifer evidently had charge over the earth and certain portions of the universe, but something took place in heaven that caused Lucifer to rebel against God. Lucifer proceeded to influence a third of the angels to follow him in his rebellion against God, and they were cast out of heaven. The Bible is silent as to what happened, other than that Lucifer rebelled and wanted to exalt himself above God. (Isaiah 14 and Ezekiel 28)

Judgement brings Darkness and Chaos –

This judgment on Lucifer caused the universe to become dark, and the earth to become dark, empty, and without form, and covered with water.

Light drives darkness away –

When God speaks, light appears, and the waters recede to their boundaries, as spoken of in Jeremiah 5:22 and Proverbs 8:29; and the Sun, Moon, and Stars, are put in their places for lights and seasons and times. When Christ returns after the Battle of Armageddon, He destroys all evil by the brightness of His Presence and the power of His Word.

Lucifer to Satan – Light-Bearer to Opposes God –

Jesus said Satan steals, kills, and destroys. When God cast Lucifer out of heaven, where Lucifer was a ‘light-bearer’ and the angels shouted with joy over the beauty of God’s creation, including earth, Lucifer became Satan, the one who opposes God.

Angels rejoiced over good that now had become dark, empty, and covered with water –

The earth, which the angels were joyful over, now becomes dark, empty, and covered with water, which is a picture of chaos. Chaos is what the devil does in this world with everything that God creates as good. God, when He had to divide the earthly atmosphere from outer space and outer space from His Throne Room, could not say that this act was a good one.

Nothing impure or unclean can abide in God’s Holy Presence or Light –

Our earthly struggles are with dark spiritual forces in the air around and above us –

We need to keep this in mind when we study the Bible, for there is more to our struggles here on earth than we can see with our natural eyes. Paul said we wrestle with principalities, powers, rulers of darkness, and spiritual wickedness; and Peter said Satan is a roaring lion going to and fro throughout the earth, seeking to devour the souls of men.

After God places man in the Garden – Satan shows up –

Lucifer, as Satan, immediately seeks to deceive Adam and Eve in the garden to commit the same sin which he had committed in heaven. Since this earth had originally been placed under Satan’s oversight, man became subject to the god of this world through disobedience.

You can’t serve two masters –

Jesus said we cannot serve two masters, we will hate the one and love the other, but we can’t love both at the same time. Paul said we become servants unto whom we obey. If we obey the flesh, we serve the god of this world. If we obey the Spirit of God, we serve the One True God through Jesus Christ.

First Promise of a Messiah –

God made a promise to Adam and Eve when He cursed the man in his working the soil of the earth, the female in bearing children, and the serpent or the devil. That promise is in Genesis 3:15 and foretells the arrival of Jesus Christ as the Messiah. Satan would bruise the heel of Christ at the Crucifixion, but Christ would bruise the head of Satan right before the White Throne Judgment. (Revelation 20:10)

Outside the Garden –

Adam and Eve give birth to Abel and Cain, who bring offerings before the Lord. Abel’s is accepted and Cain’s is not. Cain becomes angry and jealous of his brother, and kills him. God shows up and asks Cain where his brother is, and Cain utters the famous words, “Am I my brother’s keeper?”

Curse of Cain –

Cain is cursed, and marked with a mark, and sent off to the land of Nod on the east of Eden. Remember Eden was now guarded by flaming swords of angels, and no one could enter it again. Now Cain is on the east of Eden, and marries a wife who bears Enoch. Cain builds a city named Enoch, after his son. Enoch then has a son named Irad, whose son was Mehujael, whose son was Methusael, whose son was Lamech.

Polygamy not approved by God –

Lamech married two wives and introduced the first polygamy in the Bible. Please note that the seed of Cain had a curse on it; and his lineage up to the flood did not serve God, but grew more wicked and evil. Lamech also killed a man, and bragged about it to his two wives. Polygamy was not authorized by God. It was introduced by Satan, who influenced the lineage of Cain to become more disobedient to God through the generations.

Seth’s lineage produces Messiah –

God gave Adam another son, named Seth; and it was through Seth that the Messiah was to come to bruise the head of Satan.

Cain produces wicked ones destroyed by the Flood –

God said the enmity, or extreme hatred, would be between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman. We see this battle between good and evil in the two sons of Adam and Eve, and in the generations that follow them. Seth produced the Messiah. Cain produced the wicked ones who God had to destroy with the Flood.
