For God So Loved the Cosmos and You!

Have you ever had a chorus well up in your soul as you look at a sunrise or a sunset?

Psalm 19:1 says,

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands.”

A song rises from the heart….

“Oh Lord my God when I in awesome wonder consider all the worlds thy hands have made. I see the stars. I hear the rolling thunder. Thy power throughout the universe displayed.

Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee…How Great Thou art!…How great Thou art!….Then sings my soul, my Savior God to Thee…How great Thou art!….How great thou art!!!!”

Venus is slightly smaller than Earth and a little closer to the sun. It has a surface temperature of about 900 ° F and an atmosphere of carbon dioxide giving it an atmospheric pressure 90 times that of Earth.

Mars is smaller than Earth, further away from the sun, with little atmosphere, with frozen water.

Earth has just the right amounts of everything that is needed for humans to live.

  • If the distance to the sun was just 5% smaller we would have a greenhouse effect raising the temperature to 900 °F. If 1% greater we would have an Ice Age continually.
  • If the weight and diameter was greater, Earth’s core temperature would increase surface temperatures, and the atmospheric pressure, allowing dangerous gases like methane and ammonia to be stuck in the air we breathe.
  • If the weight and diameter were smaller, gravity would be weaker and atmosphere would be lighter allowing too much light to be retained, decreasing temperatures like Mars.
  • Earth’s atmosphere has been described by astronauts as a“thin blue line” because it appears so insignificant next to earth. Yet it insulates us from extreme day and night temperatures from space, and protects us from harmful solar and cosmic radiation.
  • Our atmosphere is composed of just the right amounts of 78% nitrogen, 21% oxygen and 1% argon with other trace gases. A little more or less of either nitrogen or oxygen and we would die.
  • The amount of carbon dioxide is just enough to hold in some heat without causing a greenhouse effect.
  • The small amount of water vapor allows for our rain cycles, and holds in some heat.
  • Lightening strikes Earth once per second. More than that and we’d have too many grass fires. Less and we would not have enough nitrogen to convert into plant growth.

Than you look at the cells of the body, realizing that a single cell contains as much information as 100 million pages from an encyclopedia.

Sir Fred Hoyle estimated the odds of getting just the right basic enzymes together that are necessary for life, without DNA and the actual cell, would be 1 chance in 10^40,000th power! (That is 1 with 40000 zeros after it.)

Romans 8:19 says that all creation is looking forward to the salvation of God’s people, because creation itself will then also be delivered from the curse of Satan’s and Adam’s Fall.

John 3:16, “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son.” The word ‘world’ here, could be translated Cosmos, meaning all that God has made.

Jesus is saying that God loves the entire universe and everything in it, including you and me!

William Lazareth wrote The Augustine Institute saying,

“the creation shows forth His wisdom and power…Notwithstanding its inherent ambiguities, it bears witness to God’s steadfast love and care…The majesty of God in the creation, is a reason for worshiping and thanksgiving, for trusting and obeying God.”

Christ is the order behind all the physical laws of the universe. His power keeps every atom in place and the planets revolving around the sun!

The fact the we humans survive and thrive in our environment states that God loves each one of us deeply, to the point of sending His Son to die in our place for our sins.

The vibrant colors of a sunset, the brilliant images of Hubble, the exciting flavors of our favorite foods (pizza), all the wonderful sounds of our favorite music; none of it is necessary for our survival. They are generous gifts from our loving Creator!

C.S. Lewis said,

“If the whole universe has no meaning, we should never have found out that it has no meaning: just as, if there were no light in the universe and therefore no creatures with eyes, we should never know it was dark. Dark would be without meaning.”

Werner Von Braun said,

“Finite man cannot begin to comprehend an omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent, and infinite God … I find it best to accept God through faith, as an intelligent will, perfect in goodness and wisdom, revealing Himself through His creation.”

Isaiah says,

“For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; he is God; that formed the earth and made it; he established it, he created it not a waste, he formed it to be inhabited: I am the LORD; and there is none else.”

God loves the Cosmos and He died for you so that you could be free from your sins and failures!

He has provided for us abundantly and desires for us to give thanks to Him freely from a heart that sees and appreciates all He has done for each one of us!

Psalm 148 instructs everything and everyone to give praise to God!

Praise the Lord for His goodness and mercy to us!
