The Key of David

The Davidic Key is mentioned twice in the Bible. Once in Isaiah 22:22:

“And I will place on his shoulder the “key to the house of David.”

Again in Revelation 3:7:

“And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: The words of the holy one, the true one, who has the “key of David,” who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.”

God called David, “A man after my own heart,” (Acts 13:22) because David obeyed God in whatever he was asked to do. Even when David sinned, he repented and sought a closer relationship with God.

David desired to find a resting place for the Presence of the Lord and to dwell in the House of God forever.

David’s positive characteristics were fully manifested in Jesus Christ as the “Son of David.”

Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself. He does only what he sees the Father doing. Whatever the Father does, the Son also does.” (John 5:19)

Jesus has the “Key of David.”

Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger was given the “Keys to New York City” by Mayor Michael Bloomberg for safely landing US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River January 15, 2009. It was a token of thanks for saving lives.

In Bible times cities were built with walls and gates for protection. The gate to the city was the weakest point and needed to be guarded and kept locked, choosing who was allowed to enter through the gates.

Court was held, and rulers of the city held council at the gates of the city. Gates and keys symbolized government and authority. Those given the keys to the city wore those keys on their shoulders for all to know of their authority.

Jesus descended first into the lower parts of the earth, taking the “Keys” of hell and the grave from the devil.

John in Revelation 4:1 saw a “door’ standing open in heaven. An “Open Door” was set before the Philadelphian church in Revelation 3:8.

Jesus gave the apostles the “Keys” to the Kingdom of Heaven in Matthew 16:19.

Jesus as the Son of David will soon rule from Jerusalem all the nations of this earth. He will fulfill His promise to Abraham and David that their offspring would rule from Jerusalem forever.

Isaiah 9:6-7 says, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and “the government (Keys) shall be upon his shoulder:” and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The Mighty God, The Everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. The increase of his government and peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to order it and to establish it with judgment and with justice from henceforth even forever. The zeal of the Lord of Hosts will perform this.”

Israel will be attacked in a future war where God will miraculously save them from their enemies. Then they shall begin to turn back to Jesus as their Messiah. By the end of the Great Tribulation, Israel will know Jesus Christ as their Lord and King.

Jesus will have the “Key of David” on His shoulder as He establishes His 1000 years of peace.

All nations shall come to Jerusalem to worship Him as God of all gods, King of all kings and Lord of all lords.

The lamb shall lay down with the lion and children will play with vipers without harm. Swords will be beaten into plowshares. All men shall know the Lord from the least to the greatest with children teaching others about Christ as the Son of David.

Jesus has used the Key of David to open the door to God’s throne room; the true Holy of Holies of the tabernacle.

He is holding this heavenly door open for all who ask for His forgiveness and His eternal life to enter into His Presence. Death, grave, hell, demons of Satan, all have lost their spiritual authority over those who confess Jesus Christ as their Lord and God. We need to seek a personal relationship with Him every day. Like David, we need to provide a dwelling place in our hearts for the Presence of His Holy Spirit.

The devil and this world will do all they can to discourage you in your walk with God. David suffered hard times as well as good times. He gave God credit for sustaining him through it all. He knew the promises made to him, and Abraham would be fulfilled if He just kept praising God no matter what came his way.

The Key of David is an obedient heart always seeking a closer relationship with God’s Holy Presence.

Do you not know that you yourselves are God’s temple, and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? (I Corinthians 3:16)
